Uso del Arnés de Seguridad
El trabajo en altura, que se realiza a más de 1.80 m sobre el nivel del piso, es una de las actividades más peligrosas en el sector construcción. Debes tomar precauciones para evitar accidentes fatales. Al hacer este trabajo, el uso del arnés de seguridad es imprescindible (EPP) porque evita lesiones graves o mortales en caso de que caigas (Figura 1).
Muchos trabajadores de construcción no emplean el arnés correctamente, o no lo usan, pese a que hacen trabajo en altura. Se necesita mayor supervisión en obra para asegurar que se use de forma correcta.
Un arnés es un Equipo de Protección Personal (EPP) constituido por correas de fibra (natural o sintética), elementos de ajuste, argollas y otros implementos, dispuestos y ajustados en forma adecuada sobre el cuerpo de una persona para sujetarla durante una caída y después de ella (Figura 2).
El arnés de cuerpo completo y su eslinga de sujeción (línea de vida) (Figura 2) deben cumplir dos requisitos:
a- Ser resistente para sostener el peso del trabajador.
b- Estar enganchado a una estructura sólida y en un punto de anclaje firme ubicado encima del lugar donde se trabaja (Figuras 3 y 4).

MEDIDAS PREVENTIVAS BÁSICAS:
Para usarlo:
1. Entrena al personal en el uso del arnés.
2. Inspecciona el arnés antes de usarlo: busca señales de desgaste, cortes, quemaduras u otros daños y que las costuras no estén desgarradas ni flojas. No lo uses si tiene estos defectos.
3. Colócate el arnés ajustando bien todas las hebillas y bandas (que estás últimas estén planas).
4. Introduce la cinta en la hebilla de cintura y ajusta lo máximo posible hasta donde te resulte cómodo, de modo que el arnés esté apretado pero te permita movimiento (Figura 2).
5. Asegúrate de que las bandas pasen por los omóplatos y pecho (Figura 2).
6. Coloca tu eslinga (o línea de vida) correctamente cada vez que te muevas en zonas de riesgo.
7. Utiliza una eslinga lo más corta posible (Figura 3).
8. No expongas las correas a bordes filosos ni a superficies que puedan gastarlas. Cuando no puedas evitar esto, usa material acolchado, grueso u otras barreras para evitar el contacto directo.
9. Asegúrate de que haya espacio libre abajo para que, si caes, no te golpees con objetos.
10. Algunos componentes del arnés conducen corriente eléctrica. Sé extremadamente cuidadoso al trabajar cerca a fuentes de electricidad. Mantén una distancia prudencial de 3 m como mínimo.
Mantenimiento apropiado:
El encargado de seguridad de la obra debe dar instrucciones sobre el mantenimiento del arnés. Haz revisiones periódicas para determinar el grado de desgaste, corrosión y otros defectos.
1. Límpialo adecuadamente sin usar agentes químicos o mecánicos.
2. Un arnés fabricado con fibras naturales o sintéticas se limpiará con cepillos suaves.
3. El arnés limpio debe guardarse en un ambiente seco, con temperaturas moderadas, suspendido, sin enrollar, ni que entre en contacto con líquidos que lo dañen u objetos cortantes.
4. El equipo dañado debe etiquetarse como “INUTILIZABLE” y retirarse de servicio. No intentes hacerle reparaciones.
Respecto a la caducidad: El arnés deberá ser retirado del servicio en los siguientes casos:
